Sony adds PC port developer to PlayStation Studios

The Game of Life: Super Mario Edition board game on the way this August

The Game of Life: Super Mario Edition is on the way from Hasbro Gaming, with a release date of Aug. 1. Players will compete in minigames on their way to attack Bowser’s castle. Instead of going to college and building a family unit, you’ll collect power-ups and companions along the way.

PlayStation Studios appears to be stepping up its Windows PC porting efforts, thanks to a new addition to the “PlayStation family.” Head of PlayStation Studios Hermen Hulst announced Thursday that Sony has acquired Nixxes Software, a technical developer based in the Netherlands whose credits include PC ports and optimizations for games like Marvel’s Avengers, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, and the modern Tomb Raider trilogy.

In other words, it sounds like PlayStation Studios’ gain is Square Enix’s loss.

“I highly respect Nixxes and am excited for this very experienced team to become part of the world-class development community at SIE,” Hulst said in a news release. “They have a passion for improving games and for delivering the best possible experience for gamers. Nixxes will be a strong asset for everyone across PlayStation Studios, helping our teams focus on their most important goal, which is to create unique PlayStation content at the best possible quality.”

Sony Interactive Entertainment has been expanding to PC in recent years, bringing previously PlayStation-exclusive games like Horizon Zero Dawn and Days Gone to Windows. PC versions of Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End and Ghost of Tsushima are also reportedly in the works, though Sony has yet to officially announce them.

The addition of Nixxes Software to PlayStation Studios follows news of Returnal and Resogun developer Housemarque’s recent acquisition.
